Keep Blueberries fresh

Blueberries seem low-maintenance, but how you store them makes a big difference. The key: don’t wash them until you’re ready to eat. Moisture is the fastest way to turn fresh berries into moldy ones. When you rinse them and put them back in the fridge, that lingering water creates the perfect environment for mold to grow…sometimes overnight! Rinsing too early also removes their natural protective coating (that soft, dusty-looking layer), which actually helps keep them fresh longer.
Instead, store your blueberries dry and only rinse what you plan to eat immediately. A few simple tips to make them last longer:
– Sort them when you get home. Remove any smashed or moldy berries so they don’t spread to the whole batch.
– Keep them in the original container or a breathable one. Airflow helps prevent moisture buildup
– Wait to wash until right before eating
This small habit shift, can easily give your berries several extra days of life (and save you from tossing half the container).
